Publish date: 2024-07-18

Fire crews battling the Cow Valley Fire in Eastern Oregon are at last seeing progress, after days of working around the clock to protect communities.

Fire crews working overnight report that the northern perimeter along Highway 26 and the southern flank roughly six miles south are showing no signs of heat or smoke, thanks to successful fire suppression.

The fire, which is believed to have started due to human causes, is currently burning 133,408 acres, though it did not increase in acreage overnight. Thunderstorms moving through the are Wednesday morning could have an impact on that, but for now, fire crews have an estimated 20% containment.

There is a community meeting at the Vale Senior Center on Wednesday, July 17, from 6:30-7:30, to update community members on the current state of the fire.
