SAN JUAN ISLAND, Wash. -- Police are asking for help in finding the person responsible for shooting a dog and leaving it for dead outside of a home in the Westcott Bay neighborhood on San Juan Island.

Keynew, a chihuahua, was shot with a .22-caliber bullet on October 27, according to San Juan County Undersheriff Brent Johnson.

The dog's owners say after she was shot, she laid on their porch for three hours with a shattered shoulder until they found her. Keynew survived the shooting, but had to have her front right leg amputated.

A neighbor reported hearing a gunshot, and seeing a man walk away from the property, the Island Guardian reported.

The Sheriff's Office was notified a day after the shooting, and assigned an officer to the case. Despite an extensive investigation, no suspect has been found.

Keynew's owners say they're aware she barks a lot, but can't believe someone would shoot her before speaking to them first.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 360-378-4151.
